Advint has been chosen by Hamilton Sundstrand to develop an Extensible Markup Language (XML) based test software development environment for generation of automatic test routines for Boeing 787 avionics. The effort defines a collection of XML schemas that allow Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) and test information to be exchanged in a common format that adheres to the XML standard. The exchange format can be understood by man or machine and supports both instrument and signal level control. The use of an XML based environment improves the way test system information and test results are shared with the rest of the enterprise. The XML data exchange file is in ASCII text format with user defined identifying tags organizing the data. The XML schema defines the specific elements and their hierarchy with the data exchange file. Because the text document is a file containing descriptive tags, it can operate on any platform, and a computer program can easily interpret and and parse the tags based on the schema. This environment takes advantage of the XML standard's inherent recursion and extensibility which are key technical benefits that give test systems greater flexibility in defining interfaces. With XML test information extensibility adds data elements without disrupting current system operation.
